Disturbed Universe |
Crossing it off the list.
"Do I dare Disturb the universe?" - T.S. Eliot Hey world. My name's Lauren. I'm a student at UC Santa Barbara studying paleobiology. This is mainly about my goal to accomplish all the items on a list I've made for myself- The List- before I die. There's going to be a sprinkling of inspiration and other items that interest me, though, too. project inspired by The Buried Life- www.theburiedlife.com |
These upcoming days are really busy. I’ve got midterms and papers and storyboards to do. Plus, this weekend is a friend’s birthday party, and then the Super Bowl. Oh my.
I’ve been working on The List, and it’s shaping up really nicely. I’m at #76 (milk a cow). Only a few dozen more and I’ll be at 100! It’s exciting.
Alright, enough procrastination. Time to study for ecology!
What do you guys do to stay motivated?
Hall & Oates- “You Make My Dreams”
Get ready week, here I come.
“The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver

I thought I’d give the backstory as to why I named this little project “Disturbed Universe”. It all comes from that line up there, which comes from the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot (read it here).
It’s one of my favorite poems ever. The Cliff Note’s version is basically this: the speaker goes to a party, and basically worries about growing old and never being happy. And he poses the question, “Do I dare disturb the universe?”
So I thought, yes, I will disturb the universe. Or at least, I’ll disturb my universe. And it seemed to fit so perfectly with the goals of The List. Doing stuff I’ve never done before, but always wanted to (#45- Paint a mural). Or getting over fears and doing it anyway (#27- Give blood). Or changing the outside world in the best way I can (#14- Inspire a kid).
For me, this whole project is the essence of carpe diem. And not to be cheesy, but we’ve all only got one life, one chance. If you don’t grab a hold of it now, who knows if you’ll ever get another opportunity?

Internet Diagrams + Tips from my pal Carel = A Tied Tie!
Gosh, I look like I’m going to an awful polka-barn dancing party.
29) Learn to tie a tie (and actually remember) Done!
Last night, after finishing some homework, I thought I’d try to knock out something on The List. I picked #29- “Learn to tie a tie (and actually remember)”, since that seemed like a do-able goal in about an hour.
But it turns out there’s good reason for google to suggest “tie a tie” when you type in “how to”. It was pretty ridiculous. This was one of the diagrams I was trying to follow:

Also, it couldn’t have helped that I didn’t actually have a tie, and was trying to use a ribbon.
The List so far.
